GREATER AKRON COMMUNITY TO BENEFIT FROM STATE-OF-THE-ART, LONG-TERM ACUTE CARE HOSPITAL

(01/24/07) - Select Specialty Hospital announced today its collaborative partnership with Akron General Medical Center and Summa Health System to construct and operate a freestanding long-term acute care hospital (LTACH), which will be located at 200 East Market Street, next to the Mayer Post Office Building. In this new state-of-the-art facility, Select Specialty will be a spacious 60-bed hospital with private patient rooms, six high-observation beds, a CT scanner, telemetry, and lab and radiology services.

Currently, Select Specialty Hospital has two long-term acute care hospitals in the Greater Akron area, which operate as "hospitals within hospitals," and are located within both Akron General and Summa’s Akron City Hospital. Upon completion of the new facility in May 2008, both Select Specialty Hospitals will relocate to this freestanding location.

"We deeply value the strong relationships we have with Akron General, Summa, their respective medical staffs, Mayor Plusquellic and the City of Akron," said Thomas Buckingham, Division President, Select Specialty Hospital. "Together, we will join forces to provide an enhanced level of LTACH care to benefit the Greater Akron community."

Select Specialty Hospital treats patients who require a longer acute care hospitalization to promote healing and recovery from critical and complex medical and surgical conditions. A variety of programs and services are offered, including pulmonary/ventilator weaning, wound care, heart failure, infectious disease and others that address coexisting conditions and multiple system issues. Patients benefit from an integrated approach of intensive nursing care, focused respiratory services and individualized therapies, which are provided in a highly individualized and resource-intensive setting.

"The partnership between Akron General Medical Center, Summa Health System and Select Specialty Hospital will create greater access to and heightened awareness of the vital services that long-term acute care hospitals provide to medically complex, critically ill and catastrophically injured individuals," said Buckingham. The new 53,000 square-foot, twofloor facility will be developed by Wojno Development in conjunction with Legacy Partners.

Select Specialty Hospital is part of Select Medical Corporation, a national provider of specialized health care encompassing long-term acute care, inpatient medical rehabilitation, outpatient physical rehabilitation and contract therapy. Founded in 1996, Select Medical is a privately held company headquartered in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania with 18,000 employees throughout the United States.
