DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Downtown Akron is Open for New Business

Industrial/Office Parks

One of Akron’s primary goals is to assist businesses looking to expand or relocate. To facilitate this effort, the City of Akron has established an on-going program to purchase available land and develop fully improved industrial park sites. The City makes this land available in lots of two acres or more for manufacturing or related industrial development through sale or capitalized ground lease arrangements. Presently, the City offers sites for business development in five industrial parks.

Akron Global Business Accelerator

Established in 1983, The Akron Global Business Accelerator (AGBA) offers low-cost space, business planning, as well as, management expertise to encourage the development and growth of small start-up manufacturing and technology businesses. The AGBA is a partnership of the City of Akron, University of Akron, and the State of Ohio. Today the AGBA provides nearly 200,000 square feet of space for start-up businesses in Canal Place, which is part of the former B.F. Goodrich Industrial Plant in downtown Akron. The upper three floors of the facility are designed for hi-tech start-ups and business-to-business service companies and the remaining floors house companies specializing in manufacturing, assembly and distribution. The AGBA is the largest industrial incubator in Ohio and one of the largest worldwide.

Joint Economic Development Districts

A Joint Economic Development District (JEDD) is a designated township area where Akron has extended its water and sanitary sewer systems to provide opportunities for new business development immediately outside the City’s corporation limits. In 1994, Akron became the first community in Ohio to establish township-wide JEDDs. Akron leads the way in creating JEDDs as an economic development alternative to annexation and as a way to partner with its township neighbors in encouraging planned suburban growth.
