How Code Enforcement Works
1) Reporting a complaint
Potential violations are discovered through citizen complaints, referrals from other agencies, and inspector observations in an assigned area. Once a complaint is received, an inspector will conduct an investigation to determine if there is an ordinance violation.
Residents are encouraged to contact 3-1-1 to report a potential violation.
2) Orders to Repair
If violations exist, an order to repair is issued giving the property owner time to make corrections. If problems are not fixed, legal proceedings can be initiated against the property owner in consultation with the Department of Law. You may also face a fine for non-compliance.
If you received a repair order by mail and/or posted on your property, do not ignore it! Remember, this is a “notice” that violations exist on your property. Most repair orders will give you a specific compliance date to correct your violations. If you are unable to correct your violations by that date, you must contact the inspector handling your case to request an extension
