Community Relations
Building relationships with our community is a priority for the Akron Police Department. The Community Relations Bureau is composed of two groups: The Community Relations Unit and the Community Engagement Team. The Community Relations Unit can create, implement, or partner with groups to facilitate community programs and events i.e., Safety Town, Senior Safety, ALICE (active shooter training), Hidden in Plain Sight, Operation Safe Space, Christmas with a Cop, and Police Explorers. They also coordinate recruiting efforts for new police employees. The Community Engagement Team consists of officers assigned to specific areas of the city. These officers respond to ongoing and persistent community/neighborhood issues. They attend all council ward meetings, host community events to engage with the public, and assist City officials with housing and nuisance complaints. The Community Relations Unit can be reached at 330-375-2390 and the Community Engagement Team at 330-375-2568.

This zone offers citizens personal safety when purchasing or selling items online. It can also be used as a safe public place for a child custody exchange. This safe zone is located in the lobby of the Akron Police Department at 217 S. High Street. It is staffed with a uniformed police officer, along with surveillance cameras. This location is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week without requiring appointments. Citizens entering the police station will be screened through a metal detector to ensure no concealed weapons. The Akron Police Department encourages citizens to utilize a safe zone when conducting a person to person exchange.
