2024 Water Rates
Beginning in 2024, the City of Akron will be implementing a new water rate structure. What are the changes:
- Akron is increasing the water rate from $2.73 per HCF to $3.06 per HCF which is a $0.33 raise
- Akron is significantly reducing the old declining block rate system which historically has given big discounts to the largest consumers of Akron water
- Akron is adding a fixed infrastructure charge based on water meter size
- For residential customers, that fixed charge will be $9
- See the chart below for the fixed fee for all meter sizes
The City is also launching a new water affordability program called the Akron Water Bill Assistance Program. Click here for more info or visit AkronOhio.gov/WaterAssist.
You can determine your estimated new payment by using the city’s calculator tool below. Choose your city or township, confirm whether you are a residential or commercial customer, insert your usual monthly usage in HCF and see your estimated new payment.
Form >> Authorization to Turn Water Service ON

Form >> Authorization to Turn Water Service OFF

Form >> Curb Service and Sewer Service Affidavits
If your property will be vacant for at least an entire calendar month, with a notarized affidavit we will suspend charges for curb service and sewer (properties without city water only). To ensure prompt processing, please mail the payment with the bottom portion of your bill. Please include your account number on the check or money order. Mailing your payment to any other address may result in delays in posting your payment to your account.

The meter will have a straight-read dial, like an odometer in a car. In the meter shown in Figure 2, the reading is 0390.41. This is the total number of hundred cubic feet of water recorded since the meter was installed.

We bill in whole units of 100 cubic feet and the reading is simply 390. Your water bill is determined by subtracting last months' meter reading from the current meter reading.
Please see our Frequently Asked Questions for explanations of various billing components.
You can use our Bill Calculator to see how the water and sewer portions of your bill are generated. Click here.
More information on these projects can be found at http://www.akronwaterwaysrenewed.com/

Any Water Department employee who visits your home will carry a photo identification card that they will show you at your request.
For your safety, always ask to see this identification card before allowing the person into your home.
Should someone posing as an employee refuse to show the identification card, do not let them into your home. Please call the Police at (330) 375-2181 immediately to report the impostor.
You can determine how many gallons are in a swimming pool and the cost to fill it with City water.
Many swimming pools have a bottom drain directly connected to a sanitary sewer, while other pools are pumped out or the water level lowered with portable pumps and the water is discharged directly into the homeowner’s sewer or onto the ground.
There is an EPA regulation prohibiting the discharge of chlorinated pool water into storm sewers or drainage ditches where it could meet surface water.
Yes, Water Department employees will use a lock box to gain entry to a vacant home.
When scheduling a work order to turn on or off water service, please provide our customer service representative with the combination and any special instructions to access the lock box.

(The bathroom is the major source of water usage in most homes)
- Install low-flow showerheads and also lower your cost to heat water
- Replace older, larger-use toilets with the newer higher efficiency toilets
- Install a low-flow aerator on your sink’s faucet
- Wash only full loads in the dishwasher
- When buying a new dishwasher, consider purchasing a water-saving model
- Wash only full loads in the clothes washer
- When buying a new clothes washer, consider purchasing a water-saving model
- Water your lawn only when it needs it. A good way to see if your lawn needs watering is to step on the grass. If it springs back up when you move, it doesn't need water. If it stays flat, it is time to water.
- Always use a broom to clean walkways, driveways, decks and porches, rather than hosing off these areas.

Toilets
- Remove the tank cover and pour in food coloring, brewed coffee, or other substance to color the water.
- Do not flush the toilet.
- Wait 10 to 15 minutes.
- If the water in the bowl remains clear, no leaks.
- If the water in the bowl becomes discolored, there is a leak.
Faucets
- Check faucets in the bathroom and kitchen periodically.
- Worn washers are most often the cause of dripping faucets.
- Make sure no water is being used inside or outside (no washing machine filling, no shower running, no watering outdoors, etc.).
- Locate your water meter and carefully lift the top of the meter.
- Find the blue leak detector on the meter dial. If all of your water sources are off and the leak detector is rotating, you have a leak.
